And you thought my pregnancy and delivery were topsy turvey…have a seat my readers and I will spin a good yarn for ya…the first chapter of a new journey…the journey of Gangles and Scrappy…
Mr. Gerrit has limbs and fingers that are gangly and long…real long… and toes that are as strong and long as fingers (some may even call them finger-toes) so his new name is Gangles (otherwise known as Bo Gangles, Squeaky McGee, and Gypsy). When Gangles was sprung from the NICU by his posse (hubby and I…but doesn’t posse sound tougher?), we were informed by Austin’s pediatric cardiologist that a bed was reserved and open heart surgery was scheduled for this Friday (today) at U of M hospital by one of the three senior surgeons who specialize in Austin’s condition. Austin (herein nicknamed Scrappy for reasons that follow) was diagnosed with a large VSD (Ventricular Septal Defect) at day 3 of his 12 day life and because of it’s size and location, it would require open heart surgery and a gortex patch to close it.
After one night at home packing enough baby crap to compete with Babies R’ Us, we suited up with Gangles, mother in-law, hubby and I in a two mini-van caravan that followed Scrappy’s ambulance transport to Ann Arbor. Just before suiting up for the caravan, we met up with Sarah and Lynn and picked up the oodles of handknits from the participants of the Dutchican virtual shower …THANK YOU!!!!! We promise to delve in and get all of these knits on their rightful owners ASAP!!!
Upon arrival, Scrappy was placed in a NICU that was crazy, loud, and crowded, and we headed to look for a hotel…Gangles has now officially lived one night at our house and two nights in two different hotels…He now wears a sign…”Have Pack-and-Play..Will Travel.”
We spent the entire day in NICU yesterday with Scrappy who has holes poked in every orifice in his body and where hubby and I watched a baby in the next crib turn blue and be brought back to life by an entire team of nurses and doctors. At the close of the afternoon, we were told that Scrappy’s surgery may have to be cancelled due to some problems with his kidney function…after two more hours of waiting, we were told that it was still a go.
Today, we paced in the waiting room for hours while Scrappy was taken apart, patched, and put back together. After hours of pacing, Scrappy’s doc came skipping in (wearing really cool orange rubbery shoes…how do I still take time to examine a person’s shoe taste?…I just can’t help it). Scrappy is now resting in the ICU with a round the clock team in a private room…surgery was successful and now for the day to day recovery…at least hubby and I were wearing our lucky handknit socks and I actually used my knitting as a form of worry bead therapy – a few rounds of a raglan sweater to be Scrappy’s good luck sweater when he is big and strong and we can look back at this little 4 pound guy who has been pricked and prodded and stitched and patched and laugh at his Scrappy persistence to beat the odds while he beats up his little brother and partner in crime.
Did someone say something about a 6-week recovery from a c-section?

What a ride you all have been on in just a few weeks!! I am glad to hear the surgery went well for Scrappy!! Cute nicknames!! I’ll continue to keep you all in my prayers.

Geeze woman! Should I be buying stock in Clariol for all the gray hair these boys have already given you in their two weeks of life?
UM though–very good. Very good. Even if your husband swears Scrappy’s a little Spartan in training
I’ll be thinking of y’all and hoping for Austin’s quick recovery.

Woa. I just never know what to expect over here. Glad for some good news and prayers for Scrappy, too.
December 1, 2006 at 10:01 pm
Whoa. I was speechless for a long moment.
I am glad to hear that Scrappy is recovering. I can’t imagine what it was like to see a brand new boy have open heart surgery, but I am happy to hear that the problem is fixed now, before he is older.
I hope peace and quiet is on the horizon for you.

What a ride! Holy cow. I’m so happy that the surgery went well, and will continue to send prayers and good thoughts Austin’s way. And hooray for Gerrit! It must be so nice to have him to yourself and not in a hospital. {{hugs to you all}}

I missed the deadline for the Dutchicans things…the box is still sitting here. I’ll get it off to you somehow, I promise!
That whole 6 week recovery thing with C-sections, well, it depends on the mama. I am a 4 time c-section champ. 2 were easy and 2 were tough.
The boys are just amazing. Watch out for Gerrit’s finger-toes when he starts to put weight on them…you’ll have little bruises all over your legs and stomach. ;o)

My goodness… I wondered where you’d disappeared to this week. I’m glad to hear Gerrit is doing well! I bet you’re just loving the chance to hold and snuggle Gerrit huh? And I’m sending my best wishes to Austin as well! He’s such a trooper!
Hugs & Smootches to you all!

Prayers are with you while you await Scrappy’s full recovery! Take care of Mom and Dad though, they are the only ones Gangle and Scrappy have.

Oh, lord, you guys have been thru a lot. We’re praying for Scrappy’s quick and strong recovery, and for you guys, too. Kiss the babies!

December 2, 2006 at 2:24 am
Hooray! On to recovery!

When my 1yo was born there was a concern that she could have a VSD because she does have a hole in her heart. Of course we feared the worst, blah blah blah, and she’s just fine. You’ve been through so much – this is HUGE. I can’t imagine how you are able to present it as jovially as you do except that you’re telling it as something that has already happened. I’m so so glad he did well through the surgery. I’m so so glad he’s in the very best medical hands. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Mommy and Daddy – and with little Gangles and tiny Scrappy. I know you’ll all be so happy when they’re back together at home.
December 2, 2006 at 11:54 am
Wow, Scrappy is a perfect name for him! I’m glad to hear that the surgery went well.
Um, can we see a picture of Gangles’ finger-toes?!
December 2, 2006 at 12:30 pm
there are many people out here, like me, who have never met you and probably won’t but who are praying and sending the best good thoughts to you and your family that Scrappy will think he’s BMOC by the time he’s 5. Take care, knit when needed or when time allows and know that we’re all pulling for all of you.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Austin. Scrappy is a perfect nickname for such a strong little man. I am so thankful for medical advances! Your boys are so gorgeous!
I bet Gerrit’s fingertoes are cute! My kids and I have ‘em too. One of my friends called me monkey toes when we were little. LOL
December 2, 2006 at 2:26 pm
WOW! What a roller coaster ride. Your sons are so sweet-congratulations! I will for sure remember your babies in my thoughts:) Before you know it, they will be running around the house like they own the joint-and they will own it!!!!

Oh my! Fingers crossed, prayers said!

Hello, I recently discovered your blog, but I wanted to let you know that I now have an 8 year old son who really is big and strong and wrestles daily with his brother. (That day really does come) He was 2 lbs 14 oz when he was born at 29 weeks. He was in the hospital for six weeks, and had to weigh four pounds before he could come home. The road definitely was not easy, but he is my little fighter. He is a very determined child and although he had a rough start, you would never know what he’s been through. You are in such a difficult part now, but I promise it does get better. Thinking of you and your precious little guys.
December 2, 2006 at 4:31 pm
here are hugs for you all.((((())))). one of these days when you are trying to corral him, you will think, “isn’t this the child who had to have heart surgery!?”
again, you are all in my thoughts and my coworkers send their positive thoughts too. (i have been sharing your story =0)

Kristi- I will be praying for a smooth recovery and transition for your family.
They never do tell you how long those c-section recoveries can take, I know I didn’t feel normal for a good 4 months after my c-section with Cole…(glad I could be so encouraging;) do enlist help with your home and babies and just take everything nice and slow.
Keep us posted

Oh my goodness! I’m happy to hear Gerrit is home and that Austin’s surgery went well. I’m praying for a quiet, uneventful Christmas at home for you and both boys.
December 2, 2006 at 10:15 pm
Wow….just wow…you guys hang in there.
All I could actually think of at the name “scrappy” is a line from the movie “Clerks” where a woman is in the video store trying to find a video that her daughter wanted called
“Happy Scrappy Hero Pup”……I would say that describes Austin right about now.
You look great BTW! That does it I’m going on the hospital food diet.
December 2, 2006 at 11:44 pm
Hang in there Scrappy! You look fab Kristi and Gangles is so cute. You take care of yourself while you work on getting Scrappy home.

Dang girl, I’m going to need a remote monitor on your blog, just to keep up with all the adventures. I suppose that remote monitor thing could be called bloglines, but I can’t figure out how to use it. I guess I’m gifted stupid. And totally okay with that.
Glad to hear all is well with Scrappy. I’m also excited to share yet another strange connection with you. My husband was born with the same heart defect and was treated at U of M. The surgery was pretty new back then and his surgery was part of a long-term research project on this condition and its treatment. As part of the research, his post-op condition was tracked until he turned 18 and his case is forever in the annals of U of M.
So I kind of like to think of my man being a baby pioneer who paved the way for the babies who followed. Back then they waited until the kids were 4 years old, so he had a very wheezy childhood.
And I developed a real close relationship with the CNA who changed my lady stuff every day, after my last c-section. Seriously. We both got a little verklempt on my last day.
I bet your first wine went down ree-ree good.
December 3, 2006 at 12:47 am
My whole purpose of commenting up there was to be encouraging by telling you that I got living with me, a fine sample of a man who survived being born with a broken heart.

Thanks for the update, hang in there you two. I have enjoyed your blog for quite awhile since my sister has triplets…and I know how you feel right now..except my daughter and I camped at Childrens Hosp. in Detroit. Not a heart repair and she was there for months but the sweat and turmoil is still the same…..Good Luck and I ‘m sending many prayers for Austin and you two.

Just know we are all thinking of you. You have so much on your plate right now, take time to breathe. These two little fighters have a big audience already!
December 3, 2006 at 2:51 pm
OK-It is said that God only sends you what he believes you can handle….you may want to mention that you have had the course now, handled more than you believed possible to handle , and would like normal days of just worrying about baby poop and throwup and having their “clocks” backward thus being awake during the night and asleep during the day!
Thoughts are with you all–may this be the final installment of challenges and they both be home for Christmas. and, when things get better, can we see the toes of finger???? LOL

Glad Austin’s surgery is behind you and your family can focus on getting both little men home safe and sound to be spoiled by everyone.
**Please note that Grandmothers are terrible spoilers while pretending they know nothing about spoiling at all. They are also “baby hogs” who will stop at NOTHING to have one or both babies safely in their possession leaving other people with empty arms.

Sending my best blessings to a family who is truly the definition of spirit, perseverance and love. Hang in there!

You guys have really been through the wringer in the last few months, haven’t you? Hang in there. And, um, my c-section recovery lasted much longer than six weeks. Just a note to cheer you up.

I’ve been watching your journey from afar. These boys have been blessed with way cool parents and promises of a wonderful life! Your sense of humor and positive spirit guarantee one happy family!
December 4, 2006 at 5:19 pm
My goodness! I’m glad the surgery went well. I know this is the last thing on your mind, but tell me, how did the animals react to Gangles? Or maybe they haven’t even met him yet.
My thoughts are with you guys, take care of each other.

Woo …!!! I go away for a few days and …!!
So glad that all is working out Ok and the op went well. You are both such great parents already having to cope with so much. Teenagers will seem a breeze after this.
[Then perhaps not.

Have a great Christmas with your two perfect gifts.
